World Climate Change

Bangladesh to go under water

  Staff Correspondent :

World temperatures are increasing day by day. This increase in global warming is caused by increased amounts of carbon dioxide around the earth. Most climatologists believe that the greenhouse effect is the likely cause of this global warming.

The speakers opined this at a seminar on Trend of Environment of Bangladesh. The seminar was organized at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel by different Environment organizations in observance of World Environment Day.

The speakers said the main culprits for global warming are carbon dioxide gas. It results from the destruction and burning down of tropical rain forests, traffic that clogs up city streets, the rapid growth of industry, the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in packaging and manufacturing commercial products, the use of detergents such as washing powder and washing-up liquid.

Climatologists predict that midway through the next century, temperatures may have risen by as much as 40C. This could catastrophically reduce mankind’s ability to grow food, destroy or severely damage wildlife and wilderness, raise sea levels and thereby flood coastal areas and farmland. The alarming news about Bangladesh is that as a result of the rise of the sea level, the lower southern part of the country may one day go under water.

Suppose you are a reporter of a daily newspaper. Recently there has been an exciting ODI series between Bangladesh and New Zealand, in which the New Zealand team underwent a gentle Bangla wash. Now write a report on it.

Bangla-washed

Sports Correspondent : Bangladesh completed the whitewash mission over New Zealand by a four-wicket defeat. But New Zealand in their bid to avoid the white-wash, left the spectators in tension by posting 307 for five.

Bangladesh however took the challenge despite the absence of two key players- Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal.

But soon his absence was forgotten with Shamsur Rahman, playing his only second ODI took New Zealand’s interim captain Kyle Mills in disdain plundering 16 runs with a six and a four in the third over of the chase. He never stopped after that start and Bangladesh never lost the momentum. Before the cunning slower off Corey Anderson undid him on 96, Shamsur was simply irresistible. The victory was also complimented by a string of partnership and fine knocks from Naeem Islam and Nasir Hossain who smashed 63 and unbeaten 44 runs respectively.

The Kiwis claimed to have been better prepared this time around and wanted to take a revenge of their 0-4 drubbing in 2010 made no difference indeed. Bangladesh remained the absolute favourites from the first ODI of the series and made it a lucky seven in a row.
